BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed deep concern over the heinous attack by “hooligans of the fallen Awami fascist regime” on the National Citizens’ Party’s (NCP) pre-announced “March to Gopalganj” rally. He voiced this concern in a statement on Wednesday (July 16).
In the statement, the BNP Secretary General said: “Following the downfall of the tyrannical Awami regime due to the student-public uprising, certain miscreants are once again attempting to destabilize the country and exploit the situation through chaos and anarchy. Today’s barbaric attack on NCP’s pre-declared rally in Gopalganj, including cocktail explosions, arson attacks on law enforcement and the UNO’s vehicles, and injuries to police personnel, is a reflection of that sinister effort.”
He added: “Due to the dire deterioration of law and order, Awami cohorts have risen like wounded beasts, seeking to destabilize the interim government and reap benefits amid chaos. These miscreants must be dealt with with an iron hand — there is no alternative.”
Calling upon the nation, he said: “To protect democracy and the people’s right to vote, and to prevent the resurgence of fascism, people of all classes and professions — regardless of party affiliation — must unite to protect lives and uphold national interest. Failure to do so would again put the country’s independence and sovereignty at risk.”
In his statement, Mirza Fakhrul strongly demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the attack on the NCP rally in Gopalganj. He also wished a swift recovery for the injured police officers.
