A terrible fire has gutted 37 shacks, including several shops, fishermen’s houses, in the EPZ area of Chattogram city.
The incident took place at Akmal Ali Ghat under EPZ police station around 12 midnight on Saturday. The fire service was able to completely extinguish the fire after about seven hours of effort.
The fire broke out around midnight in a shack and quickly spread through the densely packed Jelepara (fishermen’s living area), located near Outer Ring Road embankment at Halishahar coast under EPZ Police.
Eyewitnesses to the incident said that the fire had been burning in the area all night. It took seven units of the Fire Service seven hours to put out the fire as some fuel oil shops there and fishermen’s nets. Traders in the area said that the nets and boats were burnt to ashes in the fire.
Shahadat Hossain, senior officer of CEPZ Fire Service Station, said, said that the fire broke out at around 12:10 am. Seven units from Agrabad, Bandar and KEPZ stations put out the fire at around 7 am.
The extent of the damage caused by the fire is not yet known. 23 houses where fishermen’s nets were kept were burnt. The cause of the fire can be said only after investigation, he added.
