TDS Desk:

Fuel prices are unlikely to increase in April, but may be adjusted in the coming months depending on global conditions, Adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Dr Zahed Ur Rahman has said.

He made the remarks at a briefing held at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

Dr Zahed said the government is currently managing the situation by providing subsidies in the energy sector. However, considering the volatility in the global market, fuel prices may need to be increased in the future.

He also announced plans to introduce a digital app to ensure transparency and better control in fuel management. Through the app, data on fuel distribution and consumption will be recorded. A pilot phase of the project began on Tuesday.

“The government has started its journey from a fragile economic condition, and international crises have further complicated the situation. Under these circumstances, everyone will have to make some adjustments,” he said.

No shortage of petrol or octane

Speaking about fuel supply, Dr Zahed said there is no shortage of petrol or octane in the country. However, global conditions have caused some disruptions in the supply chain.

He warned that some groups are taking advantage of the situation by engaging in illegal stockpiling and smuggling, adding that the government is taking strict measures against such activities.

Measures to bring discipline to transport sector

The adviser also outlined several initiatives aimed at restoring discipline in the transport sector. These include regulating autorickshaws, introducing GPS tracking in public transport, fixing fares for air-conditioned buses, and addressing irregularities such as improper U-turns on roads.

He added that steps are also being taken to digitalize the water transport system to improve scheduling and operational efficiency.

Nationwide measles vaccination from May 3

On the health sector, Dr Zahed said a shortage of measles vaccines had emerged due to mismanagement by the previous government. To address the situation, a nationwide measles vaccination campaign will begin on May 3.

‘Krishak Card’ to be launched on Pahela Baishakh

As part of agricultural support initiatives, the government will launch the Krishak Card program on Pahela Baishakh at Tangail Stadium, he said, adding that Tk1,150 crore has been allocated for the project.

Dr Zahed further said the government has distributed 15 million saplings across the country, while eviction drives against illegal structures are ongoing under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

He also noted that the Notun Kuri Talent Hunt program is scheduled to be inaugurated on June 30.
