A gas balloon exploded during the ‘July Uprising Day’ celebration at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital on Tuesday afternoon (5 August).

Several people reportedly injured in the explosion occurred around 2:30pm.

At 2:25pm on this day last year, ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India in the face of the mass uprising. According to the organisers, balloons were released to mark the exact moment of her departure.

They said one of the gas balloons was designed in the shape of a helicopter, symbolising the manner in which Sheikh Hasina left by helicopter.
