TDS Desk:
The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has published the first gazette listing martyrs from the 2024 July uprising including the names of 834 martyrs from across Bangladesh.
Signed by Deputy Secretary Haridas Thakur and dated Wednesday, it details their medical case ID, names, fathers’ names, current addresses and permanent addresses.
On December 21, a special cell on the mass uprising released a preliminary list of martyrs and injured individuals from the student-led mass protests. That list included 858 martyrs and 11,551 injured persons.
The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, established five decades ago to preserve the history of Bangladesh’s independence war and support martyr families and war-wounded freedom fighters, is now preparing to expand its remit.
A new directorate under the ministry will be launched to support those affected by the uprising, which resulted in around 1,500 deaths and 20,000 injuries.
The interim government, after taking charge, formed a committee on August 15 under the Ministry of Health to compile lists of the deceased and injured from the uprising.
The publishing of the first official gazette listing the martyrs comes following verification.
