Global leaders extend congratulations to Tarique Rahman after BNP election win

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, secured an outright majority in the 13th national parliamentary election. Global leaders extended their congratulations and best wishes to Tarique Rahman yesterday, while also signalling interest in engaging with him and a BNP government. Leaders from influential countries across other regions have likewise offered their congratulations. Analysts say these messages reflect the international community’s endorsement of Tarique Rahman’s leadership and of his prospective government.

THE UNITED STATES

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Tarique Rahman and the Bangladeshi people, emphasising the United States’ intention to work with the new government to advance regional prosperity and security. The US Embassy in Dhaka called the result “historic” and reiterated its commitment to shared goals.

“Congratulations to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its leader Tarique Rahman as well as the people of Bangladesh. The United States looks forward to working with the newly elected government to advance prosperity and the security of the region,” the statement read.

CHINA

The Chinese Embassy in Dhaka congratulated both the people of Bangladesh and the BNP, highlighting the smooth conduct of the 13th parliamentary election and expressing readiness to collaborate with the new government to strengthen China–Bangladesh relations.

“We look forward to working together with the new government of Bangladesh and writing new chapters of China-Bangladesh relations,” read the message.

INDIA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed warm congratulations to Tarique Rahman, noting India’s continued support for a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh, and expressed eagerness to strengthen bilateral ties.

“India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh,” read the message.

“I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals”, Modi said.

In a separate message following their telephone conversation, Modi wrote “Delighted to speak with Mr Tarique Rahman. I congratulated him on the remarkable victory in the Bangladesh elections.”

“As two close neighbours with deep-rooted historical and cultural ties, I reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to the peace, progress, and prosperity of both our peoples,” Modi said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also extended greetings, wishing the Bangladeshi people well and calling for continued cordial relations.

“Wish that our relations with Bangladesh be always cordial,” read her message.

PAKISTAN

Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif congratulated Tarique Rahman on leading the BNP to a resounding victory and praised the successful conduct of the elections. He underscored his expectation of close cooperation to strengthen bilateral relations and advance shared goals of peace, stability, and development in South Asia.

“I look forward to working closely with the new Bangladesh leadership to further strengthen our historic, brotherly multifaceted bilateral relations and advance our shared goals of peace, stability, and development in South Asia and beyond,” read the message.

THE UNITED KINGDOM

The UK High Commission in Dhaka congratulated Tarique Rahman and the people of Bangladesh, noting the country’s entry into a “new chapter.” It expressed readiness to work with the new government on shared priorities including economic growth, migration, climate action, and security cooperation.

“Congratulations to Tarique Rahman and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party on your election victory and to the people of Bangladesh as the country enters a new chapter,” said the United Kingdom High Commission in Dhaka.

MALAYSIA

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hailed the BNP’s victory as a “triumph of democracy” and expressed hope for renewed bilateral ties. He highlighted the resilience of the Bangladeshi electorate in navigating extraordinary challenges.

“This is a triumph of democracy: the Bangladeshi people, having navigated a period of extraordinary challenges, have spoken clearly at the ballot box,” the message read.

“Malaysia looks forward to working with the new Bangladeshi leadership to bring new energy to our bilateral ties. I join Malaysians in extending our warmest regards to the people of Bangladesh,” said the Malaysian Prime Minister.

NEPAL

Prime Minister Sushila Karki extended her heartiest congratulations, emphasising neighbourly ties and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

“I look forward to working closely with you (Rahman) to strengthen our neighbourly ties and consolidate cooperation in areas of mutual interest, “read the message.

She also congratulated the Bangladeshi government and people on the successful conduct of the elections.

THE MALDIVES

President Mohamed Muizzu conveyed warm regards and expressed confidence that the longstanding partnership between the Maldives and Bangladesh would continue to grow in scope and strength.

He added, “I am confident that our partnership will continue to grow in scope and strength in the years ahead.”

BHUTAN

Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay congratulated Tarique Rahman and the BNP on a decisive victory, describing the result as a reflection of the people’s confidence in his leadership. He said he looked forward to strengthening ties of friendship and cooperation between Bhutan and Bangladesh.

“I look forward to working closely to further strengthen the warm ties of friendship between Bhutan and Bangladesh,” he said in a message.
