Professor Dr Asif Nazrul, Adviser on Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, has stated that the government is firmly committed to holding the election.

“We are keeping this in mind — the election will definitely be in February, and we leave in February,” he said.

He made the remarks on Tuesday (August 19) while responding to journalists’ questions after a meeting at the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat. Commenting on differing statements from political parties regarding the election schedule, he said such discussions are part of the political process.

The government has announced that the election will take place in February. Different political parties, however, are expressing varied opinions, which has created some confusion regarding the timing of the election. In response to this, the Law Adviser said, “Organising the election is the responsibility of the government, not of any political party. The government is firmly committed to holding the election in February. We are keeping this in mind — the election will definitely be in February, and we leave in February.”

He added, “Political parties often make different statements for various reasons, and that is part of the political process. You have always seen this. Traditionally in Bangladesh, such political dialogues have occurred, and they are still happening in much the same way. There has not been any significant change in these discussions. So, statements about the election schedule should be seen as part of the political process.”

Asif Nazrul further said, “We, on behalf of the government, are firmly committed. Our Chief Adviser has made this announcement, and there is no question of us stepping back from it.”
