Govt cuts import duty on dates ahead of Ramadan

TDS Desk:

Bangladesh has reduced import duties on dates by 40 percent ahead of Ramadan, aiming to keep supplies steady and prices within reach for consumers, the National Board of Revenue said on Wednesday.

NBR said in a notification the duty on imported dates has been cut to 15 percent from 25 percent. The reduced rate will remain in force until March 31, 2026, covering the peak Ramadan demand period.

The decision was taken in consideration of public religious sentiment and the need to ensure adequate availability during Ramadan, when consumption of dates rises sharply across the Muslim-majority country.

The move adds to earlier tax relief introduced in the previous national budget when advance income tax at the import stage on dates and all fruits was reduced to 5 percent from 10 percent. The government has retained a 50 percent rebate on that tax for a second consecutive year.

NBR said the combined reduction in customs duty and advance income tax would significantly lower import costs. It expects the move to help stabilise supply chains and prevent sharp price increases during Ramadan.
