The government has formed the July Mass Uprising Directorate to preserve the history and memories of the much-talked-about uprising to promote its spirit and ideology both at the state and national levels.
The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs published a gazette notification in this regard on Monday, saying that the directorate was formed in light of the decision taken by the advisory council on 12 December.
The directorate under the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs will rehabilitate the families of those killed and those who sustained injuries during the student-led mass uprising, according to the gazette.
To form the directorate, an inter-ministerial meeting was held with Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik, adviser to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, in the chair, on Monday and later, the advisory council in principle gave its approval.
The directorate will begin its activities immediately as the Secretaries’ Committee on Administrative Development has approved a proposal on creating 33 new posts to make the directorate functional.
The Student Against Discrimination’s sub-committee on health affairs has claimed that a total of 1,581 people lost their lives during the student-led July-August mass uprising across the country.
Besides, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam said a total of 1,500 cases were lodged in connection with the July-August mass upsurge and police have so far submitted charge sheets of two cases.
