The government has, in principle, approved the draft of the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) Ordinance 2024, paving the way for taking action against the country’s political parties for their indulgence in acts against humanity.

The approval was given during a meeting of the advisory council held at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Wednesday with Prof Muhammad Yunus, chief of the interim government in the chair.

If the ordinance is promulgated, the tribunal will be able to recommend trial of political parties for their involved in crimes against humanity, according to the draft of the ordinance.

For the first time since assuming charge of the country, the chief adviser entered the secretariat around 10:50 am and joined the advisory council meeting at approximately 11 am.

Earlier on Tuesday, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul said that the draft ordinance allows the tribunal to propose punitive action to relevant authorities based on necessities.

This new ordinance has sparked discussions about its implications, particularly its unprecedented emphasis on holding political parties accountable for crimes against humanity.
