Terming the current situation alarming, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday remarked that he has become very worried as he looks deeper into how the government works.

He expressed concerns about how the current system can be reformed and said that honesty, courage and morality are becoming rare in the country.

Mirza Fakhrul made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a memorial meeting and prayer session for late professor Dr Abdul Quddus at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in the capital on Saturday.

Expressing concern over the current situation, he alleged that irregularities, corruption and nepotism have become institutionalized over the past 15–16 years.

“A culture has developed where nothing moves without lobbying, which was not the case before,” he added.

Referring to the activities of Zia Parishad, Mirza Fakhrul stressed that the organization should not be turned into a “shop,” but instead of focus on research and intellectual work to present the life and ideals of Ziaur Rahman globally.

Highlighting Ziaur Rahman’s leadership, the BNP secretary general said the late president demonstrated remarkable ability to advance the country within a short time and proved that development is not possible without honesty and hard work.

Mirza Fakhrul also reiterated BNP’s support for reforms, noting that the party has expressed differing views on some proposals. He warned that the country is burdened with significant debt and emphasized the need for national unity to overcome the economic challenges.

Praising Tarique Rahman, he said the BNP chairman believes in unity politics and continues to work tirelessly.

On education and politics, Fakhrul called for ensuring merit-based practices in universities and ending politicization, warning that the absence of healthy student politics could be harmful for the country.
