Bangladesh’s industry, service and agricultural sectors’ growth suffered the most in the last fiscal year of 2023-24 (FY24), according to revised data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
Of the three sectors, industry sector growth saw the steepest decline of 4.86 percentage points compared to FY2022-23, according to the final data for FY24 BBS published on Monday (February 10).
The sector grew only 3.51% in FY24, while it logged 8.37% and 9.86% growth in the previous two fiscal years, respectively.
The BBS, in May 2024, had preliminary estimated a 6.66% growth for the industry sector.
Meanwhile, the agricultural sector recorded a 3.30% growth in FY24, down from 3.37% in FY23.
The service sector also recorded a growth of 5.09% in FY24, down from 5.37% in the previous fiscal year.
On Sunday (February 9), Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, citing unpublished final BBS data, disclosed that Bangladesh saw a GDP growth of 4.22%, down 1.6 percentage points from the initial estimate of 5.82%.
As a result of the revised GDP, per capita income stood at $2,738 in FY24, down from the preliminary estimate of $2,784.
