Former Awami League lawmaker Haji Salim has been sent to jail before his five-day remand ended, due to falling ill.
He was placed on a five-day remand on Monday (2 September) in a case lodged over the murder of Ideal College student Khalid Hasan Saifullah during the recent protests.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Akteruzzaman passed the order Wednesday (4 September) as police produced the former lawmaker before the court and pleaded to place him on a ten-day remand in the case.
The court today sent him to jail after he was produced him before the court.
Investigation Officer Akkas Miah, a sub-inspector at Lalbagh police station, stated in the forwarding report that Haji Salim was brought in on Monday to be questioned. But later, he fell sick.
In accordance with the Jail Code’s guidelines, he was then taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital late last night for care.
The IO pleaded to the court to hold him in custody while the inquiry is ongoing.
“According to the Jail Code, we will take him back to the hospital for additional care,” the IO wrote in his report.
He was detained on Sunday (1 September) in a case filed by Kamrul Hasan, father of deceased Khalid, lodged with Lalbagh police station against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 51 others.
