Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has commented that the government’s primary goal is to fulfill the people’s aspirations by handing over power to a political government through a fair, free, and participatory election.
He made this remark in response to journalists’ questions after a meeting with divisional administrative and law enforcement officials at the Sylhet District Commissioner’s Office on Monday afternoon.
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated, “The Election Commission’s preparations alone are not enough; field administration and law enforcement agencies must also prepare well. It is everyone’s responsibility to create an environment where people can vote without fear.”
He informed that in this election, the police, Armed Police Battalion (APBn), Ansar, Army, Navy, and Air Force will perform their duties together. He also mentioned that Ansar’s presence at polling centres will be increased.
Regarding the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, the adviser said, “The incident is unfortunate, and the government is investigating it.”
He further added, “We are recruiting new police personnel. Nearly 4,000 new recruits have already completed training, one batch is currently undergoing training, and another batch will soon begin training.”
The home adviser also mentioned that legal action is being taken against absent police officers, including Police Officer Harun Or Rashid and Biplob Kumar Sarkar.
Regarding reforms in the police and law enforcement agencies, he said, “The recruitment and posting processes are now much more transparent. Therefore, everyone must perform their duties impartially.”
At the same time, he identified drugs as a major threat to the country’s security and instructed a zero-tolerance policy in dealing with the issue.
When asked about weapons looted from police stations, the adviser said, “Efforts are being made to recover the weapons. You have been helping us in various ways; please assist in this matter as well.”
Regarding the looting of white stones in Sylhet, he stated, “The Department of Mineral Resources and the investigation committee of the Cabinet Division are looking into the matter.” He also assured that those responsible would be brought to justice.
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury called for vigilance against stone quarrying to protect the environment.
Commenting on the unstable situations in universities, he remarked, “Teachers are competent; problems can be resolved through discussion.”
