Sheikh Walidur Rahman Hira, office secretary of the Gopalganj Municipal Awami League and a cousin of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been sent to jail in connection with the murder of protester Amir Hossain during the July uprising.

Hira, who is also a central committee member of the Jubo League, was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday. After a hearing, Magistrate Md. Saifuzzaman rejected his bail plea and ordered him to be sent to jail.

The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md. Masud Rana of Uttara West Police Station, submitted a petition requesting Hira be held in custody pending further investigation.

Hira was arrested on Wednesday from the Bashundhara residential area in Dhaka.

According to case statement, on August 5, 2024, Amir Hossain was taking part in a protest on Jasim Uddin Road under Uttara West Police Station during the July movement. Around 4:30 PM, he was allegedly shot during a clash. He later died from his injuries at the hospital that evening.

On November 2, Amir’s father, Khorshed Alam, 57, filed a murder case with Uttara West Police Station. Sheikh Walidur Rahman Hira is named as the 67th accused in the First Information Report (FIR).

The case has drawn attention due to Hira’s political affiliation and family ties to the country’s top leadership.

Police confirmed that legal proceedings were ongoing and further arrests may follow based on the investigation.
