The High Court today rejected two separate bail petitions filed on behalf of former independent lawmaker Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman in connection with two murder cases.
The cases were filed with Mirpur Model Police Station over the killings of Jubo Dal leader Ridoy Mia and a ninth grader of Mirpur National Bangla High School in Mirpur during the mass uprising in Dhaka on July 19 last year.
The HC bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq passed the rejection orders considering that the petitions were not presented properly before the court.
Suman’s lawyer Barrister Md Liton Ahmed said that the HC bench did not grant bail to his client as the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court had earlier stayed a HC order that had granted bail to another accused, former civil aviation and tourism minister Mahbub Ali, in the same case.
Barrister Suman, the former lawmaker of Habiganj-4, was arrested from Mirpur on October 22 last year.
Before he became a lawmaker, Suman gained widespread popularity for sharing his views on various irregularities in the country.
Deputy Attorney General Md Hemayet Ullah opposed the bail petitions.
