A court in Sirajganj on Wednesday sentenced Momtaz Mahal, headmistress of Chak Joy Krishnapur Government Primary School in Tarash Upazila, to three years imprisonment in three separate cases of check fraud.
At the same time, she has been fined an amount equal to the amount mentioned in the check.
Judge Mishkat Shukrana of the Joint District and Sessions Judge Court-3 and the Financial Loan Court of Sirajganj issued the order.
Additional Public Prosecutor Delwar Hossain Montu and Peshkar (bench clerk) Abdul Rahman of the court confirmed the matter.
According to the prosecution brief that, Headmistress Momtaz Mahal received Tk 20 lakh as loan from Khokon Chandra Karmakar, son of Ram Chandra Karmakar of Tarash Upazila on June 23, 2022, Tk 5 lakh from Ismail Hossain, son of Bhasha Sheikh of Sri Krishnapur village on July 18, 2022, and Tk 20 lakh from Ratan Kumar Saha, son of Khidir Chandra Saha of Tarash in 2022. The money owed was supposed to be paid within three months due to the need for special money for household work. She promised to back the money by three months.
But, she failed to return the money on time. Later, several arbitration meetings were held on these issues. At one stage, Mumtaz Mahal gave the plaintiffs in the case a fake check each from Pubali Bank and Sonali Bank, Tarash branch. When the plaintiffs deposited the checks in their own accounts, the checks were dishonored. Later, legal notices were also sent to Mumtaz Mahal in the regard.
But since Mumtaz Mahal did not take any initiative to pay the money owed to the plaintiffs, the plaintiffs filed three separate cases in the money lending court. In the case, the court sentenced Mumtaz Mahal to one year in prison for a total of three years and a fine equal to the amount mentioned in the check. However, the accused was not present in the court when the verdict was announced.
