TDS Desk:
Intense rainfall has heightened concerns about potential flooding in several areas of Rangpur Division, particularly near major rivers.
Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and follow local authorities’ guidance to ensure safety during this period of elevated flood risk.
According to forecasts from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and other global weather agencies, heavy rainfall is expected in Rangpur Division and the upstream regions between 25 and 27 September, said Sarder Udoy Raihan, Executive Engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).
“The forecast predicts rainfall accumulation of up to 289 mm in 24 hours, with a maximum of 300 mm expected over the next three days. This intense precipitation raises concerns about potential flooding in several areas of Rangpur Division, particularly near major rivers.”
Currently, the water levels of all major rivers in Rangpur Division are flowing below the danger mark.
Rivers such as the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar are showing stable water levels. However, given the forecasted heavy rainfall, these rivers are expected to experience a rapid rise in water levels between 25 and 27 September.
The water level in the Teesta River, which flows through Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram districts, may reach the warning level, according to FFWC.
Meanwhile, the Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in Kurigram are likely to remain below the danger level, though a significant rise in water levels is still expected.
In addition to these rivers, the upper reaches of the Karatoa, Atrai, Punarbhaba, and Tangon rivers are also anticipated to see an increase in water levels over the next three days, though they are expected to stay below the danger mark.
Despite this, local authorities and communities living in low-lying areas should remain vigilant, as heavy rainfall upstream could exacerbate the risk of localised flooding, warned the official.
With the possibility of a rapid rise in river levels, there are growing concerns about potential flooding in the affected areas.
Preparedness measures, including the mobilisation of emergency services and resources, are being considered to mitigate the impact of potential floods.
