TDS Desk:
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to shower the country in the next 24 hours from 6pm on Friday (May 30) as the land deep depression has weakened into a well-marked low over Sherpur and adjoining Meghalaya, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said in a bulletin issued this evening.
The notice defines heavy rainfall as between the range of 44-88mm within 24 hours, while very heavy rainfall is categorised as more than 88mm of rainfall within 24 hours.
The rainfall is likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, reads the notice signed by Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik, meteorologist, BMD.
“Due to very heavy rainfall, landslides may occur at places over the hilly districts of Chattogram, Rangamati, Bandarban, Khagrachari and Cox’s Bazar. Besides, temporary waterlogging may occur in places over the Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas,” the BMD notice also warns.
The notice comes as the county is experiencing incessant rain since on Thursday.
As per an earlier BMD notice, Dhaka experienced 196 millimetres of rainfall over a 24-hour period from 6am on Thursday.
During the same period, the highest rainfall in the country was recorded in Noakhali, with 285 millimetres.
Other districts also saw significant rainfall: 242mm in Chandpur, 179mm in Cumilla, 164mm in Chattogram, 160mm each in Khepupara and Madaripur, and 141mm in Barishal.
The heavy showers were attributed to the weakening land depression moving across parts of the country, causing widespread rain and waterlogging in multiple regions.
