Bangladesh’s promising high jumper Mahfuzur Rahman has announced his sudden retirement from international athletics. In a social media post on Saturday, Mahfuz declared that he is stepping away from all forms of international competition.
Mahfuz first made headlines in 2019, winning a silver medal at the South Asian Games in Kathmandu. He continued to shine on the regional stage, earning a bronze medal at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships last year. His consistent performances had established him as one of the brightest prospects in Bangladeshi athletics.
However, his unexpected decision has left the sports community stunned. Explaining his reasons, Mahfuz wrote,
“I am stepping away from all kinds of international competitions. A few individuals within the Bangladesh Athletics Federation are enough to break an athlete’s morale and mentality.”
His statement has sparked widespread discussion in the athletics fraternity. Many believe that strained relations with the federation may have played a key role behind Mahfuz’s abrupt decision to call time on his international career.
