A Correspondent, Jhenaidah
The price of delicious hilsa fish remained beyond the reach of general consumers in Jhenaidah districts although supply increased partially in the last couple of days.
Many consumers were seen returning from fish markets empty-handed as they failed to meet the price demanded by the hilsa vendors.
During an onsite visit to the weekly haat at Jhenaidah fish market on Thursday, correspondent witnessed each kilogram of one-kilogram size hilsa was being sold at Tk1,600 to Tk1,700, while the price of the smaller size ones was least.
Each kilogram of the smaller size weighing 200 to 250 grams was sold at Tk750 to Tk850. A piece of the same weighting 450 to 500 grams was selling at Tk1,000 to Tk1,100 in the market.
Papiya Sharmin, a primary school teacher and Hedayet Ullah, a small trader at Jhenaidah retail fish market, said they were disappointed as the fish vendors refused to lower the price which is quite difficult for them to meet.
Papiya Sharmin said “My children asked me to bring a big size hilsa. But with this high price, I’m unable to fulfill their desire which troubles me a lot.”
Wholesale fish trader Saiful Islam in Jhenaidah fish market said usually they procure hilsa from Kuakata and other parts of Barishal. But the prices have not changed in the last two weeks despite the supply has increased partially.
