On August 5, a pivotal day in history, a sudden announcement came from ISPR (Inter-Services Public Relations) at 1:30 pm that Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman would address the nation at 2:00 pm.

As the nation waited anxiously, the timing of the speech was rescheduled to 3:00 pm. The day before, over a hundred lives were lost during violent clashes surrounding a student-led anti-discrimination movement. Ignoring the curfew, the country surged with protests demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with mass rallies heading toward Dhaka.

By 4:00 pm, General Waker delivered news that brought relief to the nation: Sheikh Hasina had stepped down and left the country. In his address, he assured the public, saying, “We promise justice for every death. Trust in the armed forces; all demands will be met, and peace and order will be restored. We will consult with the honorable President to form an interim government to guide the nation through this transitional period.”

The first Armed Forces Day celebrated on November 21 after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, commemorating the military’s commendable role during the uprising. This day reflects on the unwavering support of the armed forces for the students and the general public during the crisis. The contributions of all branches—army, navy, and air force—are being acknowledged with gratitude for their solidarity with the anti-discrimination movement.

General Waker’s decisive leadership during the July-August uprising is seen as a turning point in history. By refusing to fire on protesters, the military emerged as a symbol of trust and integrity. On 3 August, during an address at the army’s helmet auditorium, General Waker instructed his officers to refrain from firing at students or civilians under any provocation. His commitment to maintaining peace and protecting public trust prevented potential bloodshed and civil war.

Junior officers within the army expressed a strong reluctance to act against the protesting public, which eased the general’s ability to make the critical decision to withhold force. As Major Zaber (Retd.), a coursemate of General Waker, stated, “He could not accept the order to fire on students. From mid-July, he had been under immense pressure regarding this, but his ultimate decision was one of humanity and principle.”

Before his 5 August speech, General Waker engaged in discussions with political leaders beyond Sheikh Hasina’s party. He emphasized the need for an interim government to manage the nation during its critical phase. His swift decisions and communication helped avert mass mob justice following the regime’s fall, which many feared could result in widespread violence against the supporters of the deposed government.

The armed forces played a vital role in stabilizing the nation following the upheaval. They provided shelter to individuals seeking safety during the unrest, including judges, civil officials, and police officers. According to an ISPR report, 626 individuals, including political figures, judges, and their families, were sheltered in military installations.

General Waker also directed the military hospitals to provide free treatment to those injured during the protests. Over 2,000 patients were treated, including 582 who underwent critical surgeries. Support was extended to those in need of mobility aids, such as wheelchairs, and arrangements were made to send severely injured patients abroad for advanced treatment.

The armed forces worked tirelessly to restore law and order, combat drug trafficking, recover illegal arms, and address unrest in industrial sectors. In meetings with business leaders, General Waker reassured them of the military’s commitment to safeguarding industries and supply chains, ensuring the smooth functioning of the economy.

In the post-uprising period, General Waker undertook significant international engagements, including meetings at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. He highlighted the military’s impartial role and outlined a roadmap for a transition back to democratic governance within 18 months.

The military’s consistent emphasis on avoiding human rights violations and its commitment to justice have further solidified its reputation as a trusted institution. As General Waker stated during a recent visit, “Our duty is to serve the people and maintain peace. With patience and professionalism, we will continue supporting the civil administration and citizens during this transitional period.”

The events surrounding the July-August uprising and its aftermath have reinforced the armed forces’ position as a cornerstone of public trust. Under General Waker’s leadership, the military not only navigated a complex political crisis but also stood firmly with the people, earning widespread respect and admiration.
