Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has urged the superintendents of police (SP) to take strict actions against bribery and extortion.

“Bribery and extortion are the root of corruption. If we can put an end to these, many of the wrongdoings in society will be eradicated,” the adviser addressed 26 newly appointed SPs at the ministry conference room Thursday (5 September).

“Eliminating bribery and extortion will curb the power of middlemen, guarantee fair prices for farmers, and help lower the cost of essential goods, enabling people to live peacefully, he added.”

Jahangir, also the agriculture adviser, emphasised the need for the police to step away from bribery and extortion and focus on public welfare, calling for internal reforms within the force.

He also pointed out another issue within the police—the business of recruitment and transfers—and demanded an immediate halt to such practices.

The adviser warned that strict measures would be taken against any police officers found involved in these activities.

He further said, “Criminals should be dealt with according to the law, regardless of their identity. It is the responsibility of the police to restore public trust, which has been eroded due to past misconduct and corruption.”
