Several sacks (small shaped) of money were recovered from an elderly woman beggar in Masumpur Notunpara area of Sirajganj town on Thursday (October 9) afternoon.

After spreading the news, people from different areas crowded there to see the incident physically.

During a spot visit, this correspondent also found that, relatives in presence of locals were counting the money. But most of the notes were Tk 2, 5 and 10, while few were notes of Tk 50 and Tk 100.

Relatives said that 65-year-old Saleya Begum has been begging for 40 years. She used to live on the veranda of the Sirajganj Qawmi Jute Mill.

She never spent money for her own needs or even for her illness. Her lone daughter Shapla Khatun lives in Masumpur Pashchimpara in the town along with her husband Shahidul Islam, also a rickshaw puller.

While talking, Shapla said, “My mother used to live alone on the veranda of Qawmi Jute Mill instead of with us. Recently I have brought my mother to my husband’s home as she has been suffering from illness for last two months.”

A lot of money was recovered from her possession. Probably, she deposited the money by begging. I want to spend the money for her better treatment.”

Son-in-law Shahidul Islam said, “My mother-in-law never told me that she had so much money.”

Shahriar Shipu, former councilor of Ward No. 1 of Sirajganj Municipality, said that, “The beggar has been saving money for about 40 years. Currently, she has fallen in sick. Local headmen have decided to spend the money against her treatment as per need.”
