A husband allegedly committed suicide after killing his wife over a family dispute in Satkhira on Monday.
The incident took place in the afternoon at Shikari village under Satkhira Sadar Upazila.
The dead were Abdul Jalil Samrat, 36, son of late Abul Dhali of Shikri village under Satkhira Sadar upazila, and his wife Fatema Khatun, 28.
The deceased Samrat’s father-in-law, Nur Islam of Kushkhali village of the upazila, said that Samrat married his daughter Fatima 13-14 years ago. They have an 11-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter. Samrat worked as a daily wage laborer. Fatima took a job in a garment factory in Dhaka with her children a few years ago. Samrat did not take the matter well, he added.
On Sunday evening, Fatima left her children and came to her husband’s house. On Monday afternoon, the couple went home to rest. After not getting a response for a long time, Samrat’s mother kept calling them in the evening. When they did not get a response from them either, they broke down the door and entered the house with the help of neighbors and found Samrat hanging from a rope. It seemed that Fatima was strangled to death by Samrat, Nur Islam said.
Satkhira Sadar Police Station Inspector (Operations) Sushanta Ghosh said the bodies of the two have been recovered and sent to morgue. Legal action will be taken in this regard.
