A court in Sirajganj on Wednesday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for killing his wife.

The court also fined him Tk 50,000, in default; he will have to serve two more months in Jail.

Begum Salma Khatun, Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 in Sirajganj delivered the verdict, Masudur Rahman, Public Prosecutor (PP) of the court confirmed the matter.

The convict is Sultan Sheikh, son of Aynal Sheikh of Kuthirchar village in Kamarkhanda upazila of Sirajganj district.

According to the prosecution brief, Sultan Sheikh married off Tahmina Khatun, daughter of Abu Taher of Chandidasgati village in Sirajganj Sadar upazila on August 14, 2006.

After their marriage, two sons and a daughter were born in their family.

Since then, Sultan Sheikh had been torturing Tahmina for Tk 5 lakh as dowry. Centering the issue, he strangled Tahmina to death and hung her body from a ceiling in the house on August 8, 2019.

Police filed an unnatural death (UD) case in this connection. Later, victim’s father filed a case with the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Sirajganj accusing seven persons.

After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the court on June 18, 2020, accusing Sultan Sheikh. During the course of the case, the testimonies of 14 witnesses were recorded.
