An International Crimes Tribunal-3 may be established to ensure the swift trial of enforced disappearances and other offences, Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul has said.

He made the remarks on Tuesday (2 September) while speaking to journalists after inspecting renovation works at the main building of Tribunal-2.

The law adviser stated that once the adjacent tin-shed building next to the International Crimes Tribunal premises is vacated, it could be used to set up Tribunal-3. Such a step, he noted, would accelerate proceedings concerning enforced disappearances and other international crimes. He further emphasised that the government is giving the highest priority to trials of crimes against humanity, with judges, prosecutors and investigation teams working with utmost sincerity.

Dr Nazrul said that during the July mass uprising more than a thousand students and ordinary citizens were killed, while thousands more were left permanently disabled. Calling these heinous acts “grave crimes against humanity”, he stressed that justice for such atrocities is both indispensable and unavoidable. He added that from the very outset the authorities have been unwavering in their commitment to justice and remain satisfied with the pace of the trials.

Earlier at 8:30am, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul, accompanied by Housing, Public Works and Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, visited the renovation works at Tribunal-2’s main building.

They were joined by Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Mohammad Tajul Islam, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim, and several other senior officials.
