ICT asks to end probe into 2 cases against Hasina by June 24

The International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday extended till June 24 the deadline for completing the investigations into two cases over crimes against humanity against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and others.

In one of the cases filed over the crime against humanity during July uprising, former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun is the lone accused apart from Hasina.

The second case was filed against over enforced disappearance and extra-judicial killings. Earlier, the ICT issued arrest warrant against 11 people, including Hasina and Maj Gen (forced retired) Ziaul Ahsan.

A three-member bench, led by its Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the order after the prosecution filed separate petitions seeking extension of deadlines for submission of the investigation reports of the cases.

During the hearing, Mamun and Ziaul Ahsan were present in the dock.

Meanwhile, the tribunal also extended the deadline until July 20 to complete the investigation of the case filed against former minister and Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader and 44 others, including former ministers, bureaucrats, and other high-profile individuals, over the massacres during the July-August protests.

Seventeen accused were present on the dock during the hearing.

The three-member tribunal also extended the deadline for completing the investigations into a case filed over crime against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971 against Syed Titumir and two other accused to July 29.

Titumir, now on bail, was present on the dock during on Sunday hearing while two other accused have already died.
