The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday set April 6 as the deadline for submitting the probe report in a crimes against humanity and genocide case related to crimes committed in the Jatrabari area during the student-led July-August mass uprising.

The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the order granting a time extension requested by the prosecution.

“Thursday was fixed for submitting the probe report in case ICT BD 5/2024, but we requested a two-month extension. The tribunal granted our plea and set April 6 for the report,” prosecutor BM Sultan Mahmud said.

The prosecutor also stated that two of the six accused – former officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station Abul Hossain and former assistant commissioner of police’s Jatrabari zone Tanjil Ahmed – were produced before the court during the hearing.

Meanwhile, the ICT also approved two separate pleas filed by prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim concerning the seizure of various documents.

Prosecutor Gazi Mizanul Islam, Abdus Subhan Tarafdar, and Saimum Reza were also present at the event.

Jatrabari, a major entry point to the capital, became a significant battleground during the July-August uprising, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of protesters. The movement ultimately led to the downfall of Sheikh Hasina’s nearly 16-year autocratic regime. Law enforcement agencies and cadres of the then-ruling Awami League party were responsible for some of the most brutal acts in the area to suppress the student-led protests.
