Intense debate has been created among the people centering illegal encroachment and construction of a multistoried building on the vested land (Khas-land)  at Dorga road area in Sirajganj town.

Locals alleged that an influential group has taken advantage of prolonged administrative silence to illegally occupy the land and build a seven-storey structure.

According to the records of the local land office, the land is situated in Bhuter Diyar mouza, covering about 10.50 decimals. The land, formerly owned by the late Shrinath Ghosh and his father Janakinath of Kachari Para in West Bengal’s 26 Parganas, was later declared government-owned under the Vested Property Act.

Local sources claimed several individuals have recently attempted to seize the property using forged documents. Residents said the administration’s indifference has emboldened the land grabbers, allowing them to continue the construction unchecked. The building’s structure is already visible, despite having no legal approval or municipal clearance.

“This construction is being carried out in clear violation of rules and without official authorisation,” a local resident said, willing to remain anonymous.

When contacted, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) of Sirajganj, Nur Nahar Begum, said, “Occupying or constructing on government land is completely illegal and unethical. The matter has taken seriously, and necessary steps will be taken to recover the property.”

However, no eviction or demolition action has yet been observed at the site even after publishing several news-reports by different media outlets.

Deputy Commissioner Muhuammad Nazrul Islam said, “He was unaware about the incident.”

“This is the first time I am hearing about this issue. If it is proven that the land belongs to the government, we will certainly take legal action,” he told the reporter over the phone.

Legal experts and civil society members have condemned the administration’s inaction, warning that failure to safeguard government property undermines public confidence and weakens the state’s land management system.

They called for an immediate halt to the construction, a thorough investigation, and the recovery of the land. “Protecting government property is not only an administrative duty but also a matter of national dignity,” said one civil society representative.

The incident has sparked intense debate in Sirajganj over administrative accountability and the growing trend of illegal occupation of government land. Citizens are now waiting for decisive action to restore public trust and uphold the rule of law. (Source: Daily Sun)
