Incessant rainfall leaves Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway in dilapidated condition

Incessant rainfall for the last few days has left the Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway in a dilapidated condition making it difficult for vehicles’ movement.
As a result, vehicles ply over the route taking risk of fatal accidents.
Terming the mentioned portion of the highway as a death trap, drivers and commuters said, due to lack of proper maintenance, the condition of highly important highway has become ramshackle. Extreme apathy, negligence and lack of supervision by the authorities concerned are the main among many other reasons behind such poor condition of the highway during the rainy season, they opined.
During a spot visit, this correspondent found that, the condition of highway from Hatikumrul Roundabout to Bonpara has become very dilapidated due to develop of innumerable potholes and holes at places caused by the recent incessant rainfall.
Drivers and passengers say that, due to such condition of the highway, it takes more time during travel and several small and big shaped of accidents are occurring almost regularly leaving many people dead and injured.
They urged the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to renovate the damaged highway to avert frequent accidents and make the travel safe and comfortable.
In contrary, the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) says that, the damaged areas of the highway will be repaired, when the rain subsides.
Seeking anonymity, a senior officer in RHD said that, the continuous rainfall of the last few days has left several places of the highway in a dilapidated condition. Especially, potholes and large holes have been created in several places on the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway from Hatikumrul Roundabout to Bonpara due to stagnant of rain water.
In addition, the condition of Hatikumrul roundabout area on the Dhaka-Pabna highway has become so bad that the authorities concerned of the SASEC-2 project have become forced to close some portion of the route for carrying development works. Due to this, vehicles moving from Dhaka to Pabna are being compelled to use alternative way.
Abdul Barik Talukder, driver of a passenger bus going to Rajshahi from Sirajganj stated that, due to rain, potholes have developed at various points of the highway from Hatikumrul roundabout to Rajshahi via Bonpara. It is taking additional time compared to the scheduled time. On the other hand, commuters are facing immense sufferings during their travel.
Another bus driver, Abdul Quddus, said that, it is very difficult to drive vehicles on the broken road. Along with this, the vehicles’ equipments are also being damaged due to vibration caused by dilapidated condition of the road. This is why, various types of accidents have now become a regular phenomenon here.
Imran Farhan Sumel, Executive Engineer of Roads and Highways Department in Sirajganj said, “Several parts of the road have been damaged due to excessive rainfall. Emergency repairs are required to solve the problems. Once the rainfall subsides, the damaged parts will be repaired.”
It is to be mentioned that, about 22,000 vehicles from North and South Bengal travel through the Hatikumrul roundabout of the highway every day.
