Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained an Indian national after he crossed into the Bangladesh territory illegally at the Bhurungamari border in Kurigram.
The detainee was identified as Mozzafar Hossain, 48, son of Mohammad Ali from Madarganj in Sahebganj Upazila of India’s Cooch Behar district.
Major Asiful Islam Siddiqui, acting commander of the Lalmonirhat-15 BGB Battalion, confirmed the development on Thursday, saying that Mozzafar Hossain was apprehended from Votahat Bazar area near the Bagvandhar border in Bhurungamari Upazila around 8:00 pm on Wednesday.
According to BGB sources, two Indian nationals were reported to have illegally crossed the border on Wednesday night and were seen roaming around Votahat market, located 600 yards inside Bangladesh from boundary pillar 957 MP near Bagbhandar BOP. Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Bagbhandar BOP camp apprehended the individuals for questioning.
“Initially, they claimed to be Bangladeshi citizens and stated they had come to the market to purchase medicine. However, when confronted by BGB personnel, one of the suspects fled back into India, while the other, identified as Mozzaffar, was detained. Mozzaffar was later handed over to Bhurungamari Police Station,” the sources added.
Officer-in-Charge of Bhurungamari Police Station Ruhul Amin said, ‘A case has been filed against an Indian national for illegal trespassing. He was sent to Kurigram court this morning.”
