TDS Desk:
Police baton-charged protesters on Tuesday (23 December) after authorities beefed up security outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, where Hindutva outfits Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal staged demonstrations over the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a garment worker in Mymensingh.
Police used batons to disperse the protesters trying to break through security barricades outside the high commission, reports the Indian news agency ANI.
Several protesters were seen holding banners and placards, raising slogans at the mission.
Earlier, authorities put up three layers of barricading and deployed additional police and paramilitary personnel at the diplomatic mission on Radhakrishnan Marg in the Chanakyapuri locality. “We have stepped up security in view of the protest. Barricades have been put in place and forces deployed to prevent any untoward incident,” a police officer said.
Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal announced the demonstration at the high commission to denounce what they termed atrocities against Hindus and vandalism of their religious places in Bangladesh.
Yesterday, Bangladesh suspended visa and consular services for Bangladesh nationals and applicants in India’s New Delhi, Siliguri and Agartala.
The development came following protests by Hindu nationalist groups, prompting suspensions reportedly on security grounds.
Officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the suspension will remain in effect until further notice.
