To bring inflation under control in the country, it will take another two to three months, said Interim Government’s Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.
He expressed hope that inflation would be under control by next April.
“The high inflation has indeed caused problems for people, and there is no denying that,” said the Finance Advisor.
“However, the government has already taken several initiatives to reduce it. As a result, it will take another two to three months for inflation to decline. By April, inflation will reach a tolerable level, and we will see a significant improvement in June.”
He made these remarks on Tuesday (February 4) while responding to journalists’ questions after a meeting of the Government Procurement Advisory Committee at the Secretariat.
He further added that the government will take additional measures to control the prices of essential commodities during the upcoming Ramadan. The government expects that, due to these initiatives, the average inflation rate will drop to 6–7 percent by June.
According to data released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), overall monthly inflation has remained above 9 percent for more than two and a half years. In December, the overall inflation rate was 10.89 percent, while food inflation during the same period stood at 12.92 percent. In July last year, food inflation peaked at 14.10 percent.
