Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur hopes inflation will come down to 5 percent by May next year.

“I hope that inflation will come down to 8 percent next month (in May data) and slide to 5 percent by this time next year,” he said while virtually joining a press conference from Dubai on contemporary issues organised by Bangladesh Bank on Wednesday (May 14).

Mansur said that there will be no problem in meeting the inflation target in the budget.

period, you will be able to buy less for the same amount of money. Bangladesh publishes inflation data every month.

Inflation data was heavily manipulated under the deposed Awami League regime, prompting the interim government to set up a committee to draft a comprehensive white paper on the economy.

“We can continue without money from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Many people were saying that we won’t be able to continue without money from the IMF. None of this is true. Reforms will continue. Now is the time to move forward,” Mansur said.

Last month, the general point-to-point inflation rate eased slightly to 9.17 percent down from 9.35 percent in March, driven mainly by a downtrend in food and non-food prices.

The food inflation declined to 8.63 percent in April from 8.93 percent in March. The non-food inflation reached 9.61 percent, down from 9.7 percent.
