Sports Desk:
Bangladesh’s fastest man Imranur Rahman endured fresh heartbreak on Saturday when he pulled up injured during the men’s 200m final at the National Summer Athletics, ending his campaign prematurely.
The England-based sprinter, who clocked 10.64 seconds to win the 100m title on Friday, was the centre of attention at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. But midway through the 200m race, he suffered a muscle strain and could not finish. He was later taken to hospital by ambulance.
With Imranur forced to withdraw, Bangladesh Army’s Tarek Rahman claimed the 200m gold medal.
Earlier in February, Imranur had missed the National Championships due to injury. In his absence, Navy sprinter Mohammad Ismail reclaimed supremacy in the 100m.
Arriving in Dhaka on 15 August, he began his final phase of preparation. Ideally, Imranur required a full year of rehabilitation to regain peak condition, but with several international meets ahead, he chose to return to competition earlier than planned. Bangladesh is set to participate in the Islamic Solidarity Games in Saudi Arabia this November, followed by the South Asian Games in January — the region’s premier sporting event — where Imranur is expected to lead the country’s sprinting charge.
