The board of directors of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC has placed its managing director Md Omar Faruk Khan on mandatory leave.

The decision was taken at a board meeting held today (12 April), an official present at the meeting confirmed to the journalists.

During Omar Faruk’s absence, Additional Managing Director Md Altaf Hossain will serve as acting managing director.

Speaking to journalists over the phone, Omar Faruk said he had taken leave on his own until 31 May to travel to the United States.

“I am going to the US to attend a family event, so I have taken leave,” he said.

However, a senior Islami Bank official told TBS that Bangladesh Bank had verbally instructed the bank’s chairman to send Omar Faruk on leave.

Following that instruction, the board approved the decision at today’s meeting, the official added.

Omar Faruk was appointed MD of Islami Bank on 4 August 2025 after serving as the bank’s additional managing director. He previously also served as acting managing director of NRB Bank.
