Police have recovered the hanging body of Sabrina Rahman Shammi, a student of Jagannath University (JnU), from a dormitory in Tanugonj Lane, Katherpul, Old Dhaka, early Sunday.
Preliminary findings indicate suicide, confirmed Md Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Sutrapur police station.
Shammi, a first-year Sociology student from the university’s 2021-22 academic session, hailed from Narayanpur, Chougachha in Jessore. Her father’s name is Lipton.
Ali Kazi, a classmate of Shammi, said: “We heard around 4am that Shammi had taken her life. We rushed to her dormitory at Kather Pul. Shammi’s boyfriend, a Buet student, also arrived and left after visibly grieving.”
OC Saiful Islam said: “Shammi lived alone in a room of the student mess in Tanugonj Lane. Her body was discovered hanging at around 4:30am and has since been sent to Midfort Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.”
Jagannath University’s Proctor Professor Dr Muhammad Tajammul Haque said: “I reached Sutrapur police station early this morning. Initial reports suggest Shammi was in a relationship with a Buet student. The police are investigating to uncover the full circumstances and to ensure no foul play was involved. After the autopsy, her body will be transported to her village in Jessore.”
