A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered journalist Mozammel Babu to be shown arrested in an extortion case filed with Banani Police Station.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman passed the order and sent him to jail after police produced him before the court and sought his detention.
During the hearing, State Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon said, “A group led by Babu demanded Tk10 crore as extortion at the Boishakhi TV office during the military-backed caretaker government. They took Tk4.5 lakh in cash.”
Earlier on 11 January, Chowdhury Md Humayun Kabir of Boishakhi Media Ltd filed the case with Banani Police Station against Babu and two others.
Babu, then managing director of Ekattor TV, was arrested on 16 September 2024 at the Dhobaura border in Mymensingh and has remained in jail since then.
