BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the final draft of the July National Charter 2025 contains certain inconsistencies and that some issues were not presented accurately.

On Sunday (August 17), Salahuddin said the BNP is currently reviewing the draft and will submit its official opinion by 20 August.

The National Consensus Commission has already circulated the final draft of the “July National Charter 2025” to political parties. The document outlines agreed-upon reforms in areas such as the Constitution, electoral system, judiciary, public administration, police, and anti-corruption measures.

The draft notes that the Commission, along with various political parties, alliances, and groups, reached consensus on several key reforms through mutual and collective discussions. However, it also acknowledges that not all parties agreed on every proposal, with some raising objections to specific recommendations.

Bangladesh National Party Chairman and coordinator of the 12-party alliance, Syed Ehsanul Huda, told journalist that the July Charter delivered yesterday (16 August) is largely contradictory to the earlier draft they had received.

“Our consensus was that the issues we agreed upon in the July Charter, and those that can be implemented through ordinances, would be incorporated into the Constitution. This process would take two years, and the elected parliament would carry out the necessary reforms. But in the version of the July Charter sent to us, there is no mention of the timeline,” he said.

He further added, “The Commission’s proposals and recommendations should only reflect the matters on which consensus was reached. But in the July Charter, we see that issues without consensus have simply been omitted.”
