Staff Correspondent:
Families of July martyrs and those injured in the violence have staged a sit-in in front of the Secretariat, demanding the resignation of Law Adviser Asif Nazrul.
They gathered in front of the National Press Club for a protest rally around 11:15am on Tuesday. By 12:30pm, the group marched to Gate No. 2 of the Secretariat, where they took position, blocking traffic in the area.
The protesters alleged that accused individuals in the July massacre are securing bail in exchange for money. They called for the immediate resignation of Law Adviser Asif Nazrul and also demanded the removal of certain judges.
Bulbul Karim, father of July martyr Alif Ahmed Siam, said: “Even after one year, we have not received justice for my son’s killing. The government is mocking us in the name of justice. We see accused criminals securing bail through money, while the Law Adviser has failed to take any action.”
Rabiul Awal, brother of martyr Tayim, added: “We are demanding the resignation of this adviser.”
Abdul Matin, father of martyr Sheikh Shahriar, said they have been seeking justice for a year but only faced deception: “We even approached the Law Ministry, but instead of justice, they made a mockery of our suffering.”
Aminul Islam, one of the injured in July, warned: “If the July victims take to the streets again, the consequences will not be good. The martyr families and injured fear no one. The government should remember this.”
Abul Hasan, father of martyr Shahriar Hasan Alvi, expressed his frustration: “It is extremely painful that the government, which came to power through the blood of thousands of martyrs, has forced us back onto the streets even after a year of the massacre, simply to demand the resignation of the Law Adviser. We have spoken with him several times, but he only gave us empty assurances.”
