The floating jute market in Sirajganj is one of the largest – and the only of its kind – in Bangladesh, where the golden fibre is traded directly from boats.

Locally, the weekly marketplace is known as “Natuarpara Haat”, which is special for its location. Typically, all sorts of locally grown produce are available at the village market. But it takes on a special character during the rainy season, when the entire area is submerged and people from surrounding villages arrive by boat and trawler.

Hundreds of boats laden with bundles of jute converge, creating a remarkable waterborne marketplace. The scene reflects the bustling activity of farmers and traders exchanging jute, a vital cash crop for Bangladesh, with deep links to the nation’s economy and heritage.

The floating market is not only a hub of trade but also a symbol of the resilience and ingenuity of the local community. This year, harvesters and farmers have secured good prices. Per maund (40 kilograms), jute is selling at Tk3,000-4,000 this season.

Md Anwar Hossain, a local trader at the haat, said, “We are regular sellers in this market. We have had a good harvest this year, and the retail price is also favourable.”

Another farmer, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted,

“Or only concern is robbery. Looting and attacks on local farmers or wholesalers are common here. Because of that, we come to the market in teams early in the morning. Otherwise, everything is fine here.”

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Humayun Kabir said, “We have not received any complaints regarding robbery in the remote areas. However, we visit the area regularly. If any complaints are raised by locals, necessary steps will be taken.”
