BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Saturday criticized those promoting the concept of “Ziaism,” labeling their intentions as questionable.
Speaking at a discussion marking the 89th birth anniversary of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman, Khasru said that the BNP has never portrayed Zia as a superhuman or created a cult of personality around him.
“We never invented ‘Ziaism.’ While in power, the BNP never erected statues of Ziaur Rahman on the streets or displayed his posters in prominent locations. Discussions about him have always been confined to party platforms,” Khasru said during the event held at the National Press Club, organized by Zia Parishad.
Khasru highlighted the BNP’s reformist ideology, stating that the party has consistently worked for progress since its inception.
“Approximately 90% of the reforms in Bangladesh have been carried out by the BNP. Yet, many now try to lecture us on reforms,” he said.
Referring to Khaleda Zia’s “Vision-2030,” Khasru pointed out that six years ago, the BNP chairperson had proposed key political reforms, including term limits for the prime minister, a bicameral parliament, and a balanced distribution of power between the president and prime minister.
“Khaleda Zia’s vision was forward-looking, aimed at shaping a better future for Bangladesh. Saturday, these same ideas are being repeated to us as if they are new,” he added, expressing disappointment at the lack of acknowledgment.
Commenting on the current government, Khasru said that it was formed under the leadership of Dr Yunus with support from all political parties. He assured continued support for the government, provided it facilitates a peaceful transfer of power to an elected administration.
“Our support is conditional on this government’s adherence to the democratic process and the people’s ownership of elections. Any deviation from this will lead to the withdrawal of our support,” he cautioned.
Khasru emphasized the need for unity to address Bangladesh’s current challenges. “The nation has fallen into a pit. To emerge from this crisis, we need national unity. However, democracy cannot be restored without elections,” he said.
The discussion was chaired by Zia Parishad Vice Chairman Dr Md Shafiqul Islam and moderated by BNP Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon. Among the attendees were BNP Chairperson’s Advisor Advocate Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and other prominent leaders.
