Mohammad Toufiqur Rahman, the newly appointed Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Khulna, emphasized the pivotal role of the media in upholding democracy and safeguarding human rights during a meeting with local journalists on Wednesday afternoon (Sept 3). He urged journalists to focus on delivering objective and credible news.
DC Toufiqur highlighted the importance of social stability and improving law and order to foster national progress. He expressed his commitment to working impartially and sought support from all stakeholders to achieve these goals.
Describing Khulna as a district with immense potential and commercial significance, DC Toufiqur stated. “The country’s progress depends on Khulna’s development. I am here to contribute to this transformation, and it is your role to support this effort.”
He assured that under his leadership, corruption would not be tolerated, and projects would be executed with the public’s interest in mind, rather than personal gain.
DC Toufiqur’s comments came during a views exchange meeting with local journalists at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Khulna Sadar thana. He officially assumed his role as Commissioner of Khulna District on August 31, 2025.
He reiterated that the public has a right to be informed about government activities and decisions, underscoring the necessity of press freedom in protecting democracy.
“Coverage of success stories in the media can motivate others to engage in activities that benefit society,” DC Toufiqur said. He encouraged journalists to report more on Khulna’s challenges and developments.
DC Toufiqur also noted that Bangladesh’s advancement in various sectors hinges on the media’s commitment to avoiding biased reporting. He advised journalists to verify information thoroughly before publication, as inaccuracies can have significant repercussions.
The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) of Khulna Bitan Kumar Mondal and Information Officer of PID, Khulna Sharmin Akhter Ruma, and convener of Khulna Press Club Md Enamul Haque, Member Secretary of Khulna Press Club Rafiul Islam Tutul, among others. A good number journalist particularly district correspondents of different national print and electronic media from Khulna district and local journalists were present at the event.
