Law-enforcing agencies are fully prepared to maintain law and order during the upcoming election, says Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

“We don’t want police who kick or whack people. Instead, we want police who are humane in nature,” he told the media following a core committee meeting on security at his ministry on Sunday, the first working day after the Eid-ul-Azha holidays.

Before that, the advisor exchanged post-Eid greetings with officials and employees of the ministry and members of his security.

When asked about the preparation of the law-enforcing agencies to handle the next election, the advisor said: “I think the law and order forces will be ready at any time the Election Commission schedules the election. They’re already prepared.”

Asked whether the police force, which collapsed after the mass movement in July and August, is active and meeting expectations, he said:

“Who said it wasn’t active? If you think being active means the way police were in the last 15 years, we don’t want that kind of police…They will treat everyone well. Police have not turned inactive. They are now more active than before.”

The home advisor also said the law and order situation was satisfactory this Eid.

The reporters also queried about the push-ins from India.

“We have spoken about this many times. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been contacted several times. The Indian high commissioner also came to our office, and we talked.

“If there are Bangladeshi citizens in India, send them through a proper channel, and we will receive them. Throwing them into the jungle, the river, or the lake should not be done in a civilised country,” he said in reply.

Asked about the robbery in the capital by perpetrators clad in RAB uniforms, the advisor said law enforcers were on alert, and whoever was involved in the incident would be brought to justice.
