A court in Sirajganj has sentenced a man named Nazmul Hossain to life imprisonment for killing his wife over dowry in Kazipur upazila.
In addition, he was fined Tk 100,000, and in default of payment, he will have to serve an additional three months in jail.
The verdict was delivered on Monday (October 27) afternoon by Begum Salma Khatun, Judge of the Sirajganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2, in the presence of the convict.
The convicted Nazmul Hossain is the son of Nazrul Islam from Aknadighi village in Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj.
Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2, Advocate Masudur Rahman, said that Nazmul Hossain married Mim Khatun, who lived near his house, on November 13, 2021, following a love affair.
After the marriage, Nazmul began pressuring his wife to bring Tk 100,000 as dowry. In this situation, on April 6, 2022, he beat and killed Mim.
Following the incident, Mim’s father, Russel Mia, filed a case with the police against nine individuals.
After the investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing four people. Following the examination of witnesses and evidence, the judge sentenced Nazmul Hossain to life imprisonment and acquitted the remaining three accused.
