A man was beaten to death by a mob in Madhupur upazila of Tangail on Thursday, over allegations of attempting to steal a battery-run auto-rickshaw.

The incident took place around 3:30 am at Holudia village under Mahishmara union.

The dead Rasel, 35, was a resident of Madarganj upazila in Jamalpur district.

According to police, Rasel and two others arrived on a motorcycle at the house of a local resident named Jasim, allegedly to steal an auto-rickshaw. When villagers noticed the attempted theft, two suspects managed to flee, but Rasel was caught. He was severely beaten by locals and died on the spot.

Upon receiving information, police recovered the body from the scene.

Madhupur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Emranul Kabir said that law enforcement remains at the scene. “The body is being examined and will be sent to Tangail General Hospital for autopsy after the inquest,” he said.
