Model and actress Meghna Alam has been granted bail in a fraud and extortion case filed with Dhaka’s Dhanmondi Police Station.

The order came on Monday following a hearing at the court of Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sanaullah.

Court sources confirmed that Meghna’s lawyers — Mohsin Reza, Mahima Bandhan, and Barrister Sadman Sakib — argued for her bail. Considering her gender, the court approved her release on bail.

Earlier, on April 17, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia had shown Meghna arrested in connection with the case.

According to the case details, Meghna Alam, Dewan Samir, and two to three unidentified individuals are allegedly part of an organized fraud ring. The group reportedly used attractive women to trap foreign diplomats and wealthy local businessmen in romantic relationships, later blackmailing them for large sums of money by threatening to tarnish their reputations.

Dewan Samir, named as one of the key figures, is reportedly the CEO of a business firm called Kawwai and the owner of Sanjana International, a manpower company. He is also linked to Mirai International Event Management Limited. It is alleged that he hired attractive women as brand ambassadors to facilitate easy access to diplomats and businessmen.

Further investigations suggest that Dewan Samir and his associates targeted diplomats to blackmail them and extract hefty amounts of money.

On April 10, Meghna Alam was sent to jail for 30 days under the Special Powers Act. Following her arrest, Dewan Samir was also placed on a five-day remand on April 12 in a separate fraud case filed with Vatara Police Station. Meghna herself was placed on two separate remands totaling nine days in the Dhanmondi case before being sent to jail again on April 27.
