Chattogram city police recovered nine sacks of missing case documents in the early hours Thursday, and arrested a tea seller in connection with the sensational theft.

However, police did not disclose the name or affiliation of the arrestee due to the sensitivity of the incident, and told reporters that raids are continuing.

The port city’s Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Karim confirmed recovering nine sacks containing documents related to around 1,911 cases filed in Chattogram.

On 5 January, Chattogram Metropolitan Session Judge Court’s Public Prosecutor Mafizul Haque Bhuiyan filed a general diary (GD) with the police station, seeking urgent recovery of the missing files.

According to the GD, the documents were kept in front of the public prosecutor’s office since 24 April 2023 due to inadequate space inside the prosecutor’s office. The court went on full vacation on 12 December, implying the documents were likely stolen between 13 December and 31 December.
