Students of Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital, popularly known as Mitford Hospital, have declared a “shutdown”, protesting the lack of security on campus and the recent murder of scrap dealer Sohag near the hospital premises.
The announcement came on Sunday during a protest rally held on the medical college grounds.
“Patients should not feel unsafe while seeking treatment, and we should not attend classes in fear. This cannot continue. We want immediate action—otherwise, the shutdown will go on,” a protesting student said during the demonstration.
The students warned that unless their demands are met, they will continue boycotting classes and academic activities as part of the shutdown.
THEIR KEY DEMANDS INCLUDE
Meanwhile, intern doctors at Mitford hospital also observed a one-day work stoppage on Sunday in protest of the prevailing security concerns.
The protest follows the brutal daylight murder of Lal Chand, also known as Sohag, a scrap trader who was killed in front of the hospital on July 9.
The incident has sparked widespread panic among local residents, patients, and medical staff.
In response, students have continued daily demonstrations demanding justice and immediate improvements to campus security.
